She makes you care.This is one of those books that provided "an experience." It seemed to have a similar theme to TGE but I had not heard of it before and was thinking maybe it was a lesser novel and not one that made much of a splash. Ling Tan, the farmer ever faithful to the land, resisted the war in the only way he knew how, and to him, the land was everything.

His family got along very well and lived a simple life of working on a farm. Dragon Seed is allegorical, but fun-to-read and not didactic so that kids can enjoy the story as they learn.

Another great book by Pearl S. Buck! Forget The Good Earth, that's what most people associate with Pearl S. Buck (one of my most favorite novelists).

I felt that Ms. Buck really conveyed the isolation of the mostly illiterate villagers, who knew very little beyond their own village and the nearby city (probably Nanking). Set in a small Chinese village on the eve of Japanese occupation, it tells the tale of a peasant farmer, Ling Tan, and his family. They also have to go from helpless to fighting the war, even though they are not in the army. The valiant farmer Ling Tan, his wife, their children and their grandchildren- all are vividly drawn and deeply felt characters.

Each person takes these changes differently, coping as they can.
In her better novels, such as A strain of crazed, self-righteous fanaticism runs throughout Pearl S. Buck's work. A story of tragedy and how to maintain one's character and understanding of oneself and traditions in the midst of chaos.Loved it.
