One hopes that, one day, a biographer of the caliber of Patricia Bosworth (the author of the brilliant bio of Montgomery Clift) will write a book about this woman, whose life was, in the original sense of the word, extra-ordinary. An Oscar-winner in her heyday, Grahame had all but disappeared from the screen and was now battling breast cancer. 8 out of 17 found this helpful.

She is an unforgettable figure, and her tumultuous (and sometimes downright scandalous) private life adds a layer of fascination to her character. 6 out of 18 found this helpful. 6 out of 8 found this helpful. Throw in Julie Walters as Peter's mum, Vanessa Redgrave as Gloria's mom, and, no-slouch-she Frances Barber as Gloria's jealous toxic sister, and you've got a jewel of a film that may or may not get the recognition it deserves. At first the book felt a bit disjointed, as he goes back and forth in time, but it gradually comes together into a compelling and touching story. Il s'agit d'un film biographique sur l'actrice Gloria Grahame, notamment sur sa relation avec Peter Turner. Despite of watching this drama movie, this is not a boring movie, nor make us sleepy at the theater, because the setting was in Liverpool and New York in 1980s. This book has been in my personal library since our Vancouver days, so that goes back to pre-2007. Grahame's friendship with Turner became romantic despite their 30-year age difference, and the two traveled to California and New York. Hollywood can't hurt me or Gloria anymore. It is a short book, and it does read very fast, actually. But I've got my memories of the great Julie Walters, as Peter's Mum, crushing me simply saying "time to let go of her, son," and Gloria with her life scars and Peter trying to make it all better for her. We then go back in time to "Primrose Hill, London, 1979", and we see Peter running into Gloria for the first time. Highly recommended for Old Hollywood fans.I am not sure this is the type of story I should have read when I am sick myself (though to my knowledge not dying like the character) it still felt alarmingly real, maybe the point, it is a true story! There's something really sad about Peter Turner's memoir, There's something really sad about Peter Turner's memoir, It was like he was trying to reach a word count minimum. It could happen though that Ms. Bening, like Elizabeth Taylor before her, gets her Oscar one year and one film later. I remember buying the French translation of this strange, uneven yet affecting memoir, in the late eighties, when I was still living in Paris, but actually never finding the time to read it. The acting is one of the best I´ve seen, the way it is done, the atmosphere, how they linked the story, the music, EVERYTHING. This book has been in my personal library since our Vancouver days, so that goes back to pre-2007. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of The cinematography is appalling. I'm giving one star for the few moments when Vanessa Redgrave gives everyone a masterclass in restrained dramatic characterisation. Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool est un film réalisé par Paul McGuigan avec Annette Bening, Jamie Bell. He was educated at a local comprehensive school and started acting at the age of sixteen with The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. In that sense, one learns very little about Gloria Grahame besides what Turner knows - and even then, he doesn't really goes in-depth into their relationship. "Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool" (R, 1:45) is a romantic drama based on a couple of years in the life of Gloria Grahame, an Oscar winner and veteran of such classic films as "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Oklahoma". Oh and by the way, the actress is screen legend Gloria Grahame, and the film is based on the real-life memoir of her lover, Peter Turner. Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? The rest and everybody in this film are a histrionics fest, hysterical both literally and in the way they inadvertently make comedy out of such deeply depressing material and narrative premises. In the late 1970s, Academy Award-winning American actress Gloria Grahame - four times married and deeply troubled - struck up an unusual relationship with an actor from Liverpool called Peter Turner who was some three decades younger than her.

Actually, not operatic as much as blisteringly real, arresting, singular and very beautiful for its own sake. A window being opened or shut, her makeup case being close by, what kind of nightgown she was wearing... all of these things don't seem very important when you think about someone dying of cancer, but in reality, to that person who is dying, those tiny details can mean the difference between feeling like an inanimate object and feeling like a person who matters. Part of the reason is that we are almost as likely to see a favorite star on TV as in a new movie, and a bigger cause is that we simply know too much about them as people ... the mystique has been replaced by (too many) personal details and divisive political influence. Story - aging low level starlett seduces not too bright liverpool lad as her swan song, the end. 5 out of 9 found this helpful. It was published in 1986, covering barely a week in 1981, with a few flashbacks to late 1970s.A film based on this memoir, starring Annette Bening and Jamie Bell, was released in late 2017.

In this movie she is absolutely amazing, delivering - possibly - her best performance ever. Was this review helpful?
